The name ‘Telephone Exchange’ for the art space was chosen as a nod to the telephone boxes (of course!) but also to suggest both communicating and exchanging ideas.
Our ‘shop window’ is the ‘Telephone Exchange’ art space, created in 2018 by restoring disused phone booths: see our photo gallery below for the ‘before and after’ photos. You’ll also see photographs of another project, the restored Cat’s Close murals (in a vennel between the police station and Time and Tide on the High Street).
Thousands of people have seen the art works; hundreds have liked us on Instagram or – better – stopped to chat and find out what’s happening. Very young children have drawn kisses on the walls; one of North Berwick’s older residents contributed the name of his father – Squadron Leader Robert Miller – who was killed in action over France in 1942.
It’s a privilege that young people have engaged in projects through their drawings and inscriptions; and that we were asked to support the Compassionate Communities group in their work on bereavement.
This is a space where stories about our town are being written and shared.
