pARTicipate

pARTiciate is a community-based arts-activist initiative operating under the umbrella of NBEHT, and which has been active since 2017.

The focus of activity is the three phone cabins at the west end of the High Street which are formally leased from the Royal Mail Group by the Trust.

Installations over the last 24 months  have included:

  • a mural by Ukrainian artist, Tetiana Hurn, living in East Lothian;

  • a Remembrance Day display of poppies and pebbles painted by local children;

  • an  artwork by Rachel Marshall on the theme of ‘I saw three ships’, in aid of the Lifeboats.

  • Susie Wilson’s  ‘word piece’, inspired by the language of the Shipping Forecast, with accompanying art works created by residents at the Abbey.

  • Katie Ebben-Smith display of 1960s  banners on the theme of ‘communication’;

  • And most recently , D. Pryke Thomas’s installation covered the history of the North Berwick witch trials.

Professional artists, art-school trained and self-taught, contribute to projects, working alongside others who find individually creative ways to make art works large and small.

Murals, a painted frieze depicting the coast, a flashing lighthouse, over-scaled charcoal drawings have all appeared alongside a major ‘triptych’ depicting the town. Particularly popular are inscriptions which have ranged from a North Berwick form of street poetry to hundreds of messages reflecting on those loved and lost.

Anyone can contribute; all are welcome to volunteer.

Together We Thrive…

North Berwick isn’t just beautiful. It buzzes with activity - generated by both residents and visitors alike - on land and sea.

With a population of 7,840 North Berwick has over 100* community groups and activities (calculated by Coastal Communities volunteers in 2018*)

pARTicipate’s activities support the enhancement of the environment and its community - whether that’s through art and cultural projects - or via partnerships with other organisations in North Berwick.

pARTicipate offered a platform – the community did the rest. Have a look at our gallery to see some of our projects. Feeling inspired? Get in touch to see how you can get involved!
